Founded in 2024, Medrexo Tech Ltd. is an innovative Irish medtech startup that provides a cutting-edge SaaS platform to healthcare companies globally.

The company emerged from the software solutions initially developed for their sister company, Medel Healthcare—a prominent chain of phlebotomy, wellness, and health screening clinics operating across Ireland.

This foundational software became the cornerstone for Medrexo Tech Ltd.’s mission to revolutionise healthcare management through technology.

The Challenge

The Medel Healthcare team faced significant challenges with their existing online booking system, which was a generic, off-the-shelf solution. This platform, essentially a web-based form, lacked the flexibility and functionality needed to support their growing operations.

  • Lack of Customisation: The rigid system did not allow for necessary customisations, such as logging data about medical encounters or tracking appointments from booking to laboratory results.
  • Handling Multiple Bookings: The old system could not manage multiple simultaneous bookings, which was critical for a facility with multiple bays.
  • High Traffic Failures: During high-demand periods, such as the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the system frequently failed, preventing people from booking essential tests.
  • Integration Limitations: The system could not integrate with laboratory providers to log medical observations and results effectively.

After evaluating several software solutions from various vendors, it became clear that none met their precise needs. This realisation prompted Medrexo Tech Ltd. to pursue the development of a custom software solution tailored to their specific operational demands.

Objectives

When we first collaborated with Medrexo Tech Ltd., we outlined several key objectives that the new software needed to achieve.

  • Performance, Scalability & Availability
    The software had to efficiently scale during high-traffic periods, such as those experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, to ensure there were no technical barriers preventing customers from booking appointments. Additionally, the solution needed to scale down during low-traffic periods to avoid unnecessary costs.
  • Ease Of Use
    The system had to be extremely user-friendly for all users, including patients, staff, and administrators. Patients should be able to book appointments quickly and easily via their mobile devices. Staff should be able to manage bookings seamlessly from start to finish, and administrators needed the ability to set up pop-up clinics with minimal effort.
  • Detailed Reporting
    Administrators required comprehensive reporting capabilities to generate detailed statistics and insights. These reports would support critical business decisions and strategic planning.

Solution

To meet these objectives, we developed a serverless microservices architecture utilising AWS Lambda, AWS DynamoDB, and AWS API Gateway. This approach ensured high scalability, flexibility, and resilience. The frontend was built using Vue 3 with TypeScript, providing a responsive and intuitive user interface.

  • Custom Booking System: A streamlined interface for seamless appointment scheduling, designed with a mobile-first approach.
  • Scalability and Performance: Auto-scaling capabilities to manage peak loads and optimize performance during high-traffic periods.
  • Cost Efficiency: Intelligent resource management to minimize costs during low-usage periods.
  • Advanced Reporting Tools: Real-time data insights and analytics for informed decision-making.
  • Security and Compliance: Adherence to healthcare compliance standards, including GDPR, to protect patient data.

Additionally, we overcame significant technical challenges, such as integrating with laboratory provider systems using HL7 messaging and orchestrating the system with AWS CloudFormation to enable rapid deployment of new instances.

The implementation phase was meticulously executed to ensure minimal disruption.

Booking Widget Visuals

It was established that most users/patients would be using the patient portal and booking their own appointments via their mobile phones. The booking widget was designed using a mobile first approach as a result.

Future Plans

Medrexo Tech Ltd. plans to continually enhance the system by adding new features and capabilities and integrating with third parties thanks to the fact that we also built a RESTful API as part of the project.

This ongoing development will ensure the platform remains at the forefront of healthcare technology, supporting their future growth and enabling them to adapt to emerging needs in the healthcare industry.
